Address tilts and heights vs impact and UD

Hi Tyler; two address question here.

Question one:
Pardon the crude drawing, and I’m not sure why it won’t upload in a vertical orientation, but question number one regards the progression of the angle formed between the torso and the inmost femur(L on backswing, R on downswing for RH golfer), which I’ve denoted A. Maybe hip hinge is a more accurate way to describe it? Or maybe it’s better thought of as the angle between the torso and the ground? What are your thoughts on how this angle changes through the swing? Ideally, does it increase from address to top of backswing and still more to delivery, then diminish from that point until followthrough? Should feel we stand a little taller at address to accommodate that change?

Question 2 is about the amount of UD at address versus impact. How much UD should we feel at address?

Thank you sir!

Zach,

Question 1: That angle between the femur and pelvis changes depending on the movements of the backswing. I haven’t seen it as a specific measured angle on a 3D system. It would be influenced by a few movements (flexion/extension, abduction/adduction, internal vs external rotation). In the backswing, we want to load the trail hip with relative internal rotation, slight flexion, and adduction. The way the angle looks will vary slightly based on the relationship of those movements as well as the changes at the knee and ankle. I tend to go more for a feel of tension in the hip rather than a look of a specific angle.

Question 2: Typically the UD at impact is close to or slightly more than it was at set up. I think the important thing is the tension and stability that the UD can create at impact. It would be like asking you how much you should bend over to stretch your hamstring. For some it might be palms to the floor, for others it would barely reach the knees, but both would be feeling a stretch. I think it’s the same thing for UD during the release.
