What swing faults should I focus on?

Hello Tyler,

I hope you are well. I'm looking for some assistance with my swing. I'm having issues focusing on the correct faults in my swing. I feel there are many areas to improve but not sure where to start. Right now my misses are mainly pull draws and slices, more so with longer clubs. I do also have low point issues. Here is my critique of what I may need to work on.

* Chest rotation and connection in the back swing. I have a tendency to pull arms across my chest. I've seen progress with keeping my trail arm straighter longer and more in front of pec.

* I feel like I can be really armsy in the down swing which may contribute to my sequencing and low point issues.

* I can't seem to "wipe" enough towards my sternum in the transition. When viewing my swing my trail elbow always seems to be releasing just outside my trail hip.

* Loading in the backswing and transitioning into my lead side using the "Jackson 5" has been an issue.

* I have a tendency to fall back on my trail side at the end of my swing or sometimes I trip forward. I was thinking this have something to do with my bracing as well.

My apologies for being all over the place but I'm not sure what exactly I should try to correct first. Can you provide some insight into what faults you see I am making and what I should spend my time focusing? Thanks for your assistance.

Best,

Chris W.

Sorry for the delay, I gave a speech to a group of instructors at the TPI Summit this past weekend and I was busy prepping for my presentation.

It’s easy to get all over the place in this game. I think that’s why it’s important to have a road map the help problem solve when things get off.

Looking at your swing, I do see a few complimentary moves. As you mentioned, you get a little armsy in transition. Your tendency to pull down the arms leads you to lose your posture at the end of the backswing. Then, during the release, you have a strong pull of the club across your body. I think this is evident by the overly around follow through position. The screenshot of impact Is actually pretty good, but the motion to the follow through indicates more of an arm pull style release that causes timing and consistency issues.
I know you commented about the Jackson 5. I actually like your lower body action and don’t think you need much more of it. I think the bigger issue is the sequencing that makes it tough to get any shallowness from the spine and shoulder blades.

There’s one other elephant in the room, which is your trail hand grip being so weak. This seems more apparent with the driver. At some point, you might have to adjust it as you get more body rotation and less arm pull and throw. But, since the impact position is pretty good, I’d start with follow through and release. I’d look to see if I could get a little more hip turn at impact, which would require the arms feeling less dominant in the hit. Then I’d add something depending on what happens when the body starts to get more rotated.
