Understanding the golf swing

  By: Tony F on July 31, 2024, 9:40 a.m.

Recently, I read Manuel De La Torre book Understanding the Golf swing. His approach is interesting to me as he really tries to make the swing as simple as possible. One thing caught my mind, If I’m correct, his philosophy on the take away is the body will follow the swing vs the swing will follow the body (referencing the backswing) . Any thoughts on this , or your take on the back swing. It is the area I struggle the most within my own golf swing.

Hi Tony,

I haven't read Manuel De La Torre book Understanding the Golf swing, but maybe I'll try to find a copy. I know his work is widely appreciated by other golf instructors.

I like the idea of keeping it simple, I think the goal for each golfer is to get to a place where they have a few simple keys that make their swing work. The problems arise when your swing is not where you want it to be and you want to fix a part of the swing that challenges you.

When it comes to the hand vs body discussion, I think it's hard to make a firm rule that something always drives. Developmentally, we often move our bodies to help us look and reach for things. So there is some merit to the idea that the body will follow what the hands want to do. But Neurologically, if your body is functioning correctly, the body will activate from the core outward. Many people feel this and interpret this as a feeling of the body leading. They both happen and are both accurate descriptions. That's why I like to teach a few things. What do the arms do, what does the body do, how do they relate to each other. I find that understanding each side of the movement can increase your odds of making a breakthrough and finding one of the simple keys for your swing.

With the backswing, a struggle is often a sign of a power source issue in transition. Often from loading the arms instead of loading the body. If you want more direct advice, feel free to post a video of your swing and we can investigate what might help you.

Happy Golfing,
Tyler

Thanks Tyler,
Enclosed is a recent video of my swing. My biggest challenge is the backswing. Very short and abbreviated and not sure to the reasons why. I do have some wear and tear, workout regularly but you can see it is very short. Any advice or exercises is very appreciated

Thank you

Tony

Hi Tony, I agree that the short backswing is something worth investigating. It looks like it might have a baseball influence?

I have a number of drills that work on making a fuller turn, but it usually involves two components. The arms staying wider, longer, or the body moving more. I'm sure there's some wear and tear, but it looks like your body gets into a pretty good amount of turn in the finish. This makes me optimistic that you have more capability to turn in the backswing as well.

I'd start with this idea here to see if it helps with the backswing length https://www.golfsmartacademy.com/golf-instruction/how-to-extend-to-finish-your-back-swing/

Thanks Tyler, yes, there is some baseball in my past. Actually quite a bit. The kicker is that I am a natural lefty which confuses me because I have no ability to swing lefty as a golfer but was a pretty good baseball player in my day . LOL. Golf is the only sport I play right handed. Go figure. It’s encouraging that you do see follow through rotation. Great point.
I will look at you recommendations and work from the videos on a fuller backswing. Thanks again for your response I am a big fan of you and look forward to working on my backswing. Any additional links/ exercises/ videos is mush appreciated.

Happy golfing!
Thank you,
Tony

Hi Tony,

Yes, baseball has some helpful cross overs to the golf swing, but also some challenges. Check out this video I did on the topic - https://www.golfsmartacademy.com/golf-instruction/insight-adjusting-from-a-life-of-baseball/

I don't directly cover the backswing issue, but sports like baseball and lacrosse can lead to backswing where a golfer deliberaly shortens the body movement.

Keep us posted,
