Avoid Lazy Aiming

This video addresses a common issue that affects many golfers: "lazy aiming." Learn how to break the habit of aligning unconsciously with tee boxes or range mats, which can throw off your aim on the course. Through this simple but effective drill,  this video shows how aiming at different targets can improve focus and accuracy. Discover how slight adjustments in alignment, even by a few degrees, can build confidence for when you face challenging targets on the course. Perfect for golfers looking to translate range skills to the course and elevate their game with intentional aiming.

1
00:00:05.035 --> 00:00:08.165
This drill video is avoid lazy aiming.

2
00:00:08.705 --> 00:00:13.045
So many students, many golfers that I have, I have a kind

3
00:00:13.045 --> 00:00:15.165
of an indoor outdoor, uh, performance studio.

4
00:00:15.515 --> 00:00:17.365
It's got, um, you know, it's kind

5
00:00:17.365 --> 00:00:19.605
of aimed at a specific spot on the driving range.

6
00:00:19.875 --> 00:00:23.765
I'll have people hitting there, um, just casually hitting,

7
00:00:24.025 --> 00:00:26.325
and then I'll ask them to deliberately aim at a target

8
00:00:26.355 --> 00:00:29.005
that might be just a few degrees away from

9
00:00:29.005 --> 00:00:31.445
where the building is aimed and they'll often struggle.

10
00:00:31.695 --> 00:00:33.805
These are the same golfers that when we go on the course,

11
00:00:34.105 --> 00:00:36.685
if a tee box is aimed to the left

12
00:00:36.685 --> 00:00:39.365
or to the right, they have a hard time recognizing it

13
00:00:39.385 --> 00:00:40.685
and they aim with the tee box.

14
00:00:40.945 --> 00:00:42.845
So one of the concepts here is we're gonna try

15
00:00:42.845 --> 00:00:44.325
to avoid lazy aiming.

16
00:00:44.685 --> 00:00:46.085
I want you to make it a habit that

17
00:00:46.365 --> 00:00:50.125
whenever you go to the driving range, if they have mats,

18
00:00:50.755 --> 00:00:54.285
then you are never going to aim exactly

19
00:00:54.295 --> 00:00:55.485
where the mat is pointing.

20
00:00:55.745 --> 00:00:59.525
So I am never going to be perfectly square

21
00:01:00.185 --> 00:01:02.285
to the framework of the mat.

22
00:01:02.705 --> 00:01:05.165
I'm, I might be one or two degrees to the left,

23
00:01:05.265 --> 00:01:07.365
or I might be one or two degrees to the right,

24
00:01:07.585 --> 00:01:09.805
but I wanna get used to the edge

25
00:01:09.805 --> 00:01:12.005
of the mat not being perfectly square.

26
00:01:12.465 --> 00:01:15.685
If I wanna put in alignment, stick down, I'm okay with that.

27
00:01:16.025 --> 00:01:18.285
It just won't be parallel to the end of the mat.

28
00:01:19.265 --> 00:01:22.205
Now, um, if you're practicing off grass,

29
00:01:22.345 --> 00:01:24.205
we don't have this constraint.

30
00:01:24.205 --> 00:01:27.205
We don't have the laziness of aiming here,

31
00:01:27.465 --> 00:01:30.005
but we can still have a laziness of not picking targets.

32
00:01:30.225 --> 00:01:32.965
Now, if you are working purely on mechanics

33
00:01:32.965 --> 00:01:35.645
and you're not getting ready to take this to the course,

34
00:01:36.115 --> 00:01:38.765
then I'm not too worried about where you're, um,

35
00:01:38.815 --> 00:01:40.285
where you're aimed and where you're hitting it.

36
00:01:40.545 --> 00:01:43.205
But that should only be a small portion of your practice,

37
00:01:43.205 --> 00:01:44.845
especially if it's more of a warmup

38
00:01:44.845 --> 00:01:46.045
and you're getting ready to go play.

39
00:01:46.345 --> 00:01:49.045
If you're trying to transfer this to the course, then I need

40
00:01:49.045 --> 00:01:50.805
to be picking a specific target.

41
00:01:51.265 --> 00:01:55.525
And I want to practice giving myself visual challenges,

42
00:01:56.025 --> 00:01:57.765
not making it easier on myself.

43
00:01:57.985 --> 00:02:00.565
So if this was my mat, this box,

44
00:02:00.635 --> 00:02:03.485
I've got it aimed pretty much at that bunker.

45
00:02:03.905 --> 00:02:06.725
So now if I wanted to aim at the blue flag,

46
00:02:07.225 --> 00:02:09.365
now visually this looks like I'm aimed

47
00:02:09.845 --> 00:02:11.565
sideways compared to the mat.

48
00:02:11.865 --> 00:02:15.685
Um, but I've double checked it with my, with my feels

49
00:02:15.785 --> 00:02:17.485
and my visuals compared to the target.

50
00:02:17.835 --> 00:02:21.325
This will help me make a more confident swing on the course

51
00:02:21.395 --> 00:02:23.805
when I have a little bit more of an uncomfortable aim.

52
00:02:24.145 --> 00:02:26.485
So now we're aimed at that blue flag.

53
00:02:29.865 --> 00:02:32.205
Ugh, Caught my neck a little bit on that one.

54
00:02:32.335 --> 00:02:33.765
Heard the sprinklers going off.

55
00:02:36.075 --> 00:02:38.645
Golfers always have good excuses. Those are my two one.

56
00:02:38.715 --> 00:02:43.005
Alright, so now the, the competitor in me wants

57
00:02:43.005 --> 00:02:47.605
to try it again, but the teacher

58
00:02:47.705 --> 00:02:48.885
in me says, you know what?

59
00:02:49.245 --> 00:02:50.725
I don't wanna give into it that easy.

60
00:02:50.985 --> 00:02:53.005
I'm going to now pick a different target.

61
00:02:53.105 --> 00:02:55.765
So now I'm gonna aim right of that bunker.

62
00:02:56.065 --> 00:02:59.405
So I'm aiming what feels like right

63
00:02:59.405 --> 00:03:00.725
of this box on the ground

64
00:03:06.085 --> 00:03:09.265
and I got it just, it's a tiny bit left of my target.

65
00:03:09.265 --> 00:03:11.305
It's still right of the bunker. So it was a good shot.

66
00:03:11.585 --> 00:03:13.465
I was happy with that and it accomplished my goal

67
00:03:13.485 --> 00:03:15.865
of not having a lazy aim.

68
00:03:16.605 --> 00:03:20.345
Now I'll give myself a second try at the left

69
00:03:21.495 --> 00:03:22.505
blue and white pole.

70
00:03:23.085 --> 00:03:25.985
So I'm aiming there. This does visually look distracting,

71
00:03:25.985 --> 00:03:29.065
but I can still get committed by into the shot

72
00:03:32.285 --> 00:03:33.665
and that's not bad.

73
00:03:33.695 --> 00:03:34.945
Just a tiny bit left

74
00:03:35.325 --> 00:03:37.865
of the blue flag, but pretty happy with that.

75
00:03:38.165 --> 00:03:40.545
I'm gonna wrap it up before my equipment gets wet.

76
00:03:41.485 --> 00:03:44.025
If you are struggling with taking your range game

77
00:03:44.045 --> 00:03:47.505
to the course, it could be a result of your process.

78
00:03:47.725 --> 00:03:49.385
And part of your process is aiming.

79
00:03:49.405 --> 00:03:52.145
So when you're practicing, always pick a target

80
00:03:52.285 --> 00:03:54.425
and don't make it easily easy.

81
00:03:54.905 --> 00:03:58.305
Visually. Avoid what I refer to as lazy aiming.
