Combo - 9 to 3 Four Square and Motorcycle

The motorcycle move works on rotating the shaft during the downswing. Rotating the shaft during the downswing is a hallmark of golfers with greater consistency. But, if you rotate the shaft you'll want to combine it with a shallower path. A shallower path also is a hallmark of golfers with greater consistency. This drill combination allows you to work on both at the same time. It also helps you clarify the feedback of reading ball flight curve.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:06,000
The Strel is combining 9 to 3 4 square and 9 to 3 motorcycle.

00:00:06,000 --> 00:00:11,000
Many golfers need to work on their face to path relationship and when they do they tend

00:00:11,000 --> 00:00:12,000
to lose the path.

00:00:12,000 --> 00:00:18,000
So one of the most common things that I see is golfers come in, let's say, with a club

00:00:18,000 --> 00:00:20,000
face that's wide open kind of like this.

00:00:20,000 --> 00:00:25,000
We're not a whole lot of shaft rotation and a little bit from the outside and they hit

00:00:25,000 --> 00:00:31,000
weak shots, but straight shots and with the driver it fades and they don't like how far it

00:00:31,000 --> 00:00:33,000
goes or how consistently they are.

00:00:33,000 --> 00:00:37,000
One of the first things that we need to work on is shaft rotation, getting the club

00:00:37,000 --> 00:00:39,000
face square to the path.

00:00:39,000 --> 00:00:42,000
So after they've learned to read feedback they say, alright, I can see that the club

00:00:42,000 --> 00:00:46,000
faces open to the path, I need to get that more closed.

00:00:46,000 --> 00:00:51,000
And then what they'll do is they will try to do the motorcycle move, but frequently they

00:00:51,000 --> 00:00:56,000
will steep in the path like this in order to close the face and now they hit these massive

00:00:56,000 --> 00:00:58,000
poles.

00:00:58,000 --> 00:01:05,000
So frequently what I do is while they're doing the shaft rotation or working on the motorcycle

00:01:05,000 --> 00:01:08,000
I'll just create the visual of force square.

00:01:08,000 --> 00:01:13,000
So we won't get into any of the details of how they can shallow it out or get the club

00:01:13,000 --> 00:01:15,000
to swing more into out.

00:01:15,000 --> 00:01:21,000
But I'll explain to them that when they close the face, if the path stayed out to the

00:01:21,000 --> 00:01:26,000
left they're going to hit big poles so they have to shallow it out a little bit more.

00:01:26,000 --> 00:01:31,000
Well everything that shallowes the club tends to open the face so that puts a higher

00:01:31,000 --> 00:01:36,000
priority on now doing that shaft rotation and doing that motorcycle movement.

00:01:36,000 --> 00:01:42,000
So what I've done here, I've taken the spray paint and drawn force square there.

00:01:42,000 --> 00:01:46,000
Normally I just use a T and mark it in the ground but you should be able to see that.

00:01:46,000 --> 00:01:53,000
And then I'll usually start golfers with the ball, T-UP right in the center of it.

00:01:53,000 --> 00:01:57,000
But I'll take away the ball, I should say this is the first step I do before I put the

00:01:57,000 --> 00:01:59,000
ball there and T-UP.

00:01:59,000 --> 00:02:05,000
I'll have them go back to that 9 o'clock position, close the club face and then try to get

00:02:05,000 --> 00:02:13,000
the club to brush the ground going from square number one to square number three.

00:02:13,000 --> 00:02:19,000
So basically back to here, close the club face, brush through there and then check in

00:02:19,000 --> 00:02:21,000
the finish position to make sure that it stayed close.

00:02:21,000 --> 00:02:31,000
So this forces them to pay attention to the path while focusing on the club face.

00:02:31,000 --> 00:02:38,000
And they do them together, it'll look something like close the club face, little on

00:02:38,000 --> 00:02:45,000
the toe, little bit of a pull so I probably was straight and then into box four, not quite

00:02:45,000 --> 00:02:47,000
enough one to three.

00:02:47,000 --> 00:02:53,000
But it allows me to figure out what I need to work on.

00:02:53,000 --> 00:02:58,000
It gives me a little bit better feedback than just doing, that was better there.

00:02:58,000 --> 00:03:05,000
So it gives me more feedback than just doing the 9 to 3 with the motorcycle.

00:03:05,000 --> 00:03:10,000
Those two skills have to go hand in hand because if you change your face the path relationship,

00:03:10,000 --> 00:03:12,000
your path will have to adjust as well.

00:03:12,000 --> 00:03:18,000
This is a great way to work on it, combining 9 to 3s or going into full swings but using

00:03:18,000 --> 00:03:22,000
the motorcycle with some type of path alignment like either the force square or the bowling

00:03:22,000 --> 00:03:28,000
alleys, I really prefer doing 9 to 3 in combination with the force square.

00:03:28,000 --> 00:03:30,000
Here we have the close up view.

00:03:30,000 --> 00:03:36,000
So again I'll normally just do this by carving a line like that, like I showed in the

00:03:36,000 --> 00:03:37,000
force square drill.

00:03:37,000 --> 00:03:40,000
But here we've got the spray paint to make that a little bit easier.

00:03:40,000 --> 00:03:46,000
I'm going to work on trying to get the club face closed but closed coming from here.

00:03:46,000 --> 00:03:51,000
Golfers tend to either come from the inside with it open or come from the outside with

00:03:51,000 --> 00:03:52,000
it closed.

00:03:52,000 --> 00:03:56,000
It takes a little bit of training and getting used to coming from the inside while still

00:03:56,000 --> 00:03:58,000
having it closed.

00:03:58,000 --> 00:03:59,000
So you get set up.

00:03:59,000 --> 00:04:02,000
You can do this either off the ground or on the tee.

00:04:02,000 --> 00:04:06,000
I usually prefer starting on the tee but we'll go for it.

00:04:06,000 --> 00:04:12,000
So you're going to go 9 o'clock, close the club face, swinging through so that it launches

00:04:12,000 --> 00:04:15,000
pretty straight even though the club face stayed close.

00:04:15,000 --> 00:04:21,000
You can then work this pattern up to fuller and fuller swings so we can do a little

00:04:21,000 --> 00:04:24,000
3-4.

00:04:24,000 --> 00:04:27,000
Close the club face.

00:04:27,000 --> 00:04:28,000
That one the ball launched left.

00:04:28,000 --> 00:04:33,000
So now I'll focus, I'll get the club face set and then I'll shift my focus more to the

00:04:33,000 --> 00:04:35,000
path.

00:04:35,000 --> 00:04:38,000
So club face closed.

00:04:38,000 --> 00:04:42,000
That one was much better in terms of the ball flight started a little right and then

00:04:42,000 --> 00:04:43,000
drew back.

00:04:43,000 --> 00:04:48,000
This is a great way to work on combining the face and path.

00:04:48,000 --> 00:04:51,000
You just visualize the path and you focus on the feel of the club face and together

00:04:51,000 --> 00:04:54,000
it allows you to get good feedback while you're putting in reps.
