Feeling Narrow Vs Wide in Backswing

In today's golf lesson, I discuss the feeling of "width" versus "narrowness" in a golf swing. It highlights that feeling "wide" doesn't always mean physically wider. The key is the position of the shoulder blade and arm, impacting swing effectiveness. Even if it feels "narrow," focusing on the shoulder blade leads to a more connected and powerful swing. Video analysis is crucial to adjust the swing. The shoulder blade's alignment affects whether it feels narrow, compact, or wide. Don't fear feeling narrow; it can result in a more effective, controlled, and consistent swing. The shoulder blade's position is more crucial than the arm's width for this feeling.

00:00:05.265 --> 00:00:06.125
In this concept video,

1
00:00:06.255 --> 00:00:10.045
we're gonna take a look at feeling narrow versus feeling wide in the backswing.

2
00:00:10.385 --> 00:00:14.565
Um, so golfers understand that we wanna get width,

3
00:00:14.665 --> 00:00:17.965
but oftentimes when I help them actually get width,

4
00:00:18.115 --> 00:00:19.805
sometimes it feels narrow.

5
00:00:19.945 --> 00:00:23.565
So we're gonna talk through that phenomena and help you figure out what are you

6
00:00:23.565 --> 00:00:23.985
gonna feel?

7
00:00:23.985 --> 00:00:27.285
Is it gonna feel narrow or is it gonna feel wide for you at the top of the

8
00:00:27.285 --> 00:00:31.045
swing? Um, so the challenge becomes the shoulder blade.

9
00:00:31.265 --> 00:00:32.725
So within the,

10
00:00:32.785 --> 00:00:36.285
in the golf swing is more controlled by keeping the arm straight,

11
00:00:36.825 --> 00:00:41.805
not really by like bending forward or rounding my spine and reaching away.

12
00:00:42.145 --> 00:00:45.525
Yes, I can get my hand wider there, but it's also very disconnected.

13
00:00:45.665 --> 00:00:50.245
I'm not in a position to transfer anything from my upper body or my core into my

14
00:00:50.245 --> 00:00:53.165
arm. So when we're looking at getting wide,

15
00:00:53.745 --> 00:00:57.165
the shoulder blade will be back and a little bit more connected,

16
00:00:57.345 --> 00:00:59.485
and the arm or the elbow will be straight.

17
00:00:59.825 --> 00:01:02.885
So this is wider than that.

18
00:01:03.435 --> 00:01:08.125
Even though this might feel like it's further away, um, you can see that the,

19
00:01:08.145 --> 00:01:11.325
the arm is back, is bent. And what'll usually happen is, uh,

20
00:01:11.325 --> 00:01:15.845
when you do that pattern in the back swing, it'll have a look kind of like this,

21
00:01:16.135 --> 00:01:19.205
where compared to my shoulder, it feels like my hand's far away.

22
00:01:19.225 --> 00:01:22.685
So if I pull my shoulder back and straighten the arm,

23
00:01:22.915 --> 00:01:26.685
this actually feels tighter because the shoulder and the arm is actually a

24
00:01:26.685 --> 00:01:30.965
little bit closer to my body. Um, even though the arm is straight and on video,

25
00:01:31.115 --> 00:01:33.285
it's going to look wider. So that's the,

26
00:01:33.465 --> 00:01:37.485
the crux of it is you gotta use some video to look at your swing at the top of

27
00:01:37.485 --> 00:01:38.605
the swing. If,

28
00:01:39.345 --> 00:01:42.925
if you have that shoulder back and you have pretty good hip turn and

29
00:01:42.925 --> 00:01:43.445
flexibility,

30
00:01:43.445 --> 00:01:47.605
you'll be able to see the shoulder blade appearing on this side of your head as

31
00:01:47.605 --> 00:01:48.805
you approach to the top of the swing.

32
00:01:49.105 --> 00:01:52.725
If on the other hand you see that shoulder blade kind of stall here,

33
00:01:53.115 --> 00:01:57.525
then what'll happen is the arm will be bent and this is going to, uh,

34
00:01:58.025 --> 00:01:59.405
be very narrow. Now,

35
00:01:59.405 --> 00:02:02.565
oftentimes this will feel wide 'cause my shoulder is pushing that way.

36
00:02:02.825 --> 00:02:06.045
And then what'll happen is when you start trying to feel that shoulder blade

37
00:02:06.045 --> 00:02:10.565
back, this will feel narrower because this space has closed up.

38
00:02:10.985 --> 00:02:14.525
So don't be afraid to feel narrow,

39
00:02:14.945 --> 00:02:19.565
but monitor width as far as kind of that trail arm straightness up at the top of

40
00:02:19.565 --> 00:02:23.045
the swing. If you get that arm straighter, it won't be totally straight.

41
00:02:23.045 --> 00:02:24.725
It'll bend probably close to 90 degrees,

42
00:02:24.785 --> 00:02:28.685
but if that shoulder blade has pulled back appropriately, um,

43
00:02:29.035 --> 00:02:33.805
that increases kind of the rotational movement of the shoulder in that sling.

44
00:02:34.065 --> 00:02:37.325
Um, and it loads up a much more powerful and, uh,

45
00:02:37.355 --> 00:02:39.485
connected position at the top of the swing.

46
00:02:39.865 --> 00:02:42.045
So don't be afraid if you feel more compact,

47
00:02:42.275 --> 00:02:45.405
even if it looks wider when you're making a better back swing.

48
00:02:46.945 --> 00:02:50.725
So I've got a bunch of different videos as far as ways to kind of feel and

49
00:02:50.725 --> 00:02:54.445
experiment with it, whether it's triangle or trail arm in front of Peck. Um,

50
00:02:54.465 --> 00:02:56.965
but for this little demo, we're just gonna, uh,

51
00:02:57.155 --> 00:02:59.605
kind of go through those two common positions.

52
00:02:59.865 --> 00:03:04.285
So if I go up to the top of the swing and I lose that shoulder blade and pull

53
00:03:04.285 --> 00:03:07.125
up, this still feels like I'm pushing out,

54
00:03:07.705 --> 00:03:10.605
but I'm pushing out from my shoulder blade next.

55
00:03:10.625 --> 00:03:13.445
If I go up to the top and I pull this shoulder blade back,

56
00:03:13.445 --> 00:03:15.245
but I feel like I'm pushing out from my elbow,

57
00:03:15.955 --> 00:03:20.605
that almost feels like it's closer, but just a little bit more tense.

58
00:03:20.985 --> 00:03:25.925
So on this one I'm gonna go with that kind of tense feel rather than the feeling

59
00:03:26.065 --> 00:03:30.315
of width. Well,

60
00:03:30.515 --> 00:03:34.195
a little thin there. Um, and what you'll,

61
00:03:35.255 --> 00:03:39.195
one of my favorite phrases is, do you see how that feels? Um, but what you'll,

62
00:03:39.265 --> 00:03:44.035
what you'll see and what I'm experiencing is that the arm and the body will tend

63
00:03:44.035 --> 00:03:46.395
to be a little bit more synced up. Um, and it'll,

64
00:03:46.605 --> 00:03:48.235
it'll move in a more connected way.

65
00:03:48.495 --> 00:03:52.395
And my overall low point and consistency is gonna go way up from having that

66
00:03:52.395 --> 00:03:54.995
more, that more solid radius control.

67
00:03:56.135 --> 00:03:58.315
So if you are struggling with, um,

68
00:03:58.775 --> 00:04:01.155
trying to find a feeling at the top of this wing, uh,

69
00:04:01.165 --> 00:04:02.475
don't be afraid to feel narrow,

70
00:04:02.575 --> 00:04:06.395
but know that the shoulder blade is the key to whether you're gonna feel narrow,

71
00:04:06.545 --> 00:04:10.315
compact, or wide. Um, the other end of the,

72
00:04:10.415 --> 00:04:14.755
the spectrum is where the elbow is. That one can also relate to feeling, uh,

73
00:04:15.015 --> 00:04:17.115
narrow connected or wide, uh,

74
00:04:17.175 --> 00:04:20.715
but it'll usually be the shoulder blade that really drives that feeling for a

75
00:04:20.715 --> 00:04:21.235
lot of golfers.
