Outside In Progression Trouble

Struggling with inconsistent contact when changing your swing path? In this video, we break down why transitioning from an outside-in swing to a more inside-out path can initially cause fat and thin shots. Learn how to adjust your body rotation, pressure shift, and hand position to improve both path and contact for more solid, consistent ball striking.

1
00:00:04.995 --> 00:00:08.045
This concept video is outside in progression trouble.

2
00:00:08.735 --> 00:00:12.445
Oftentimes golfers who come, uh, in

3
00:00:12.445 --> 00:00:15.085
for lessons have a natural outside in pattern.

4
00:00:15.545 --> 00:00:18.805
And then as we start making them come a little bit more from

5
00:00:18.805 --> 00:00:20.325
the inside or less outside,

6
00:00:20.515 --> 00:00:23.725
what can often happen is initially you lose some

7
00:00:23.725 --> 00:00:25.405
of your contact quality.

8
00:00:25.705 --> 00:00:28.165
Um, so I'm gonna walk you through that common scenario

9
00:00:28.485 --> 00:00:31.565
'cause a lot of golfers kinda get frustrated when they start

10
00:00:31.565 --> 00:00:32.845
hitting it more fat and thin

11
00:00:33.075 --> 00:00:34.325
even though it's going straighter.

12
00:00:34.425 --> 00:00:36.925
Um, so this takes just a little understanding

13
00:00:36.945 --> 00:00:39.565
of looking at the, the path of the club.

14
00:00:40.145 --> 00:00:45.005
If I have a, um, swing plane that's pretty much on, uh,

15
00:00:45.145 --> 00:00:47.525
in line kind of like this, uh, you'll see

16
00:00:47.525 --> 00:00:48.845
that it has a contact point.

17
00:00:48.845 --> 00:00:50.125
We'll put this pretty close

18
00:00:50.145 --> 00:00:52.005
to in line with the golf wall there.

19
00:00:52.345 --> 00:00:53.685
Now if I keep the center

20
00:00:53.785 --> 00:00:56.605
of this hula hoop at about the same position

21
00:00:56.905 --> 00:00:58.365
and I start shifting this more

22
00:00:58.365 --> 00:01:00.125
and more inside out, you can see

23
00:01:00.125 --> 00:01:02.565
that the contact point has moved further

24
00:01:02.715 --> 00:01:03.925
back just like this.

25
00:01:04.425 --> 00:01:08.895
If I move it more outside in, you can see

26
00:01:08.895 --> 00:01:10.775
that the contact mo point moves more forward.

27
00:01:11.195 --> 00:01:15.495
So what a lot of golfers present with is more of a center

28
00:01:15.555 --> 00:01:18.175
of the swing that is actually back behind the golf wall,

29
00:01:18.355 --> 00:01:20.335
and then a path that is outside in.

30
00:01:20.715 --> 00:01:24.175
If you don't change both of those, if you just change, uh,

31
00:01:24.235 --> 00:01:26.655
the outside in component, then what'll happen is

32
00:01:26.655 --> 00:01:29.375
because the swing or the center of the swing is backward,

33
00:01:29.515 --> 00:01:31.575
we start hitting a bunch of contact problems,

34
00:01:31.575 --> 00:01:32.695
either fat or thin.

35
00:01:33.795 --> 00:01:38.295
Uh, the goal is to get the club swinging pretty straight

36
00:01:38.355 --> 00:01:41.535
or slightly inside out, but use body rotation

37
00:01:41.875 --> 00:01:45.735
and pressure shift, uh, to get the um, and

38
00:01:45.755 --> 00:01:47.815
or the wipe in order to get the center

39
00:01:47.915 --> 00:01:49.815
of the swing ahead of the golf ball.

40
00:01:50.155 --> 00:01:53.655
Um, so that you can get this, the benefit,

41
00:01:53.795 --> 00:01:56.975
the shallow benefit of the path being more inside out,

42
00:01:57.075 --> 00:01:58.215
but the contact benefit

43
00:01:58.235 --> 00:01:59.895
of having the center of the swing more forward.

44
00:02:00.155 --> 00:02:02.335
So that's a global goal of what we're trying to do.

45
00:02:02.795 --> 00:02:07.615
Um, if you are, uh, kind of especially, um,

46
00:02:07.985 --> 00:02:10.335
steep or kind of arm dominant on the way backward,

47
00:02:10.365 --> 00:02:13.455
just know if you start, uh, coming from the inside,

48
00:02:13.955 --> 00:02:16.095
you might struggle with some contact issues.

49
00:02:16.595 --> 00:02:19.415
The remedy is almost always gonna be something related

50
00:02:19.515 --> 00:02:22.535
to body position or the, the wipe

51
00:02:22.555 --> 00:02:25.335
and getting the hands a little bit more forward, um,

52
00:02:25.335 --> 00:02:28.135
potentially staying a little bit more, uh, down

53
00:02:28.195 --> 00:02:29.415
to allow for those to happen.

54
00:02:29.555 --> 00:02:31.295
But those are the two solutions

55
00:02:31.325 --> 00:02:34.015
that move the contact point forward even

56
00:02:34.015 --> 00:02:35.135
though you're improving the path.

57
00:02:35.675 --> 00:02:38.995
So try to avoid getting too frustrated.

58
00:02:39.405 --> 00:02:41.595
Check in on either contact location

59
00:02:41.655 --> 00:02:43.315
by looking from the face on view.

60
00:02:43.315 --> 00:02:44.955
You've got other videos that can help you figure out what

61
00:02:44.955 --> 00:02:47.115
to look for, um, or directional issues

62
00:02:47.255 --> 00:02:49.475
by looking more at the down the line video.

63
00:02:49.975 --> 00:02:54.555
Um, one other, uh, caveat is with this, uh,

64
00:02:54.775 --> 00:02:58.275
as you're going from the swing path a little bit more

65
00:02:58.275 --> 00:03:00.765
outside in to a little bit more inside out, um,

66
00:03:00.915 --> 00:03:04.285
what can happen is to avoid the fat shot.

67
00:03:04.465 --> 00:03:06.125
As you start getting your hands more ahead,

68
00:03:06.345 --> 00:03:07.205
you start hitting the ball

69
00:03:07.245 --> 00:03:08.325
a little bit more off to the right.

70
00:03:08.665 --> 00:03:11.405
Um, so one of the natural progressions is you come in

71
00:03:11.405 --> 00:03:13.685
with kind of a slice and then you get it more back

72
00:03:13.685 --> 00:03:15.525
and you start hitting more of like a push

73
00:03:15.825 --> 00:03:19.205
and then you can figure out how to, uh, hit it more solid

74
00:03:19.465 --> 00:03:21.285
and use some of the motorcycle

75
00:03:21.345 --> 00:03:23.285
or shaft twisting in order to get it more online.

76
00:03:23.745 --> 00:03:26.685
So be patient. I, I promise it's worth it.

77
00:03:26.865 --> 00:03:29.765
Um, because even the good shots with a severely

78
00:03:29.835 --> 00:03:31.965
outside in path don't feel that great.

79
00:03:31.985 --> 00:03:34.125
And when you start getting the club coming more from the

80
00:03:34.125 --> 00:03:37.525
inside, you feel like you have a much, uh, big

81
00:03:37.585 --> 00:03:40.365
or you feel like you have much less timing to rely on.

82
00:03:40.505 --> 00:03:43.205
You're gonna feel like the club is just kind of in the slot

83
00:03:43.265 --> 00:03:44.485
or lined up longer,

84
00:03:44.705 --> 00:03:45.885
and you'll feel like you won't have

85
00:03:45.885 --> 00:03:48.165
to time it perfectly in order to hit your best shots.
