Reading Lies

When you have a lie that is above or below your feet, you are going to have a hard time using the lower body exactly the same. It's important to go into the shot with a good strategy based on the options that the lie presents you with. The general rules are:

Ball below your feet - slightly outside-in path is preferred, which opens up the options for fades, pulls, or pull draws

Ball above your feet - slightly inside-out path is preferred, which opens up the options for draws, pushes, and push fades.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:04,000
This concept video is read every lie.

00:00:04,000 --> 00:00:09,000
So when I do playing lessons which we're in the middle of the season so I'm doing them a lot more,

00:00:09,000 --> 00:00:15,000
when I do playing lessons, one of the first things that I'm teaching people is how to evaluate

00:00:15,000 --> 00:00:17,000
the lie and how that influence is shot selection.

00:00:17,000 --> 00:00:22,000
So here I've got the whole actually is a dark-like left but I'm aiming over these trees

00:00:22,000 --> 00:00:24,000
in this particular video.

00:00:24,000 --> 00:00:29,000
You can see that the ball would be well below my feet in this particular stance.

00:00:29,000 --> 00:00:35,000
This is kind of pretty close to exaggerated because if we get too much more than that

00:00:35,000 --> 00:00:36,000
the ball is not going to be able to stay on it.

00:00:36,000 --> 00:00:42,000
So this is going to be close to the ball below my feet as much as I can and if I spun

00:00:42,000 --> 00:00:48,000
around the opposite way you'll see that the ball is going to be well above my feet.

00:00:48,000 --> 00:00:56,000
So the tricky question is at some point right if I had the ball well below my feet like

00:00:56,000 --> 00:00:58,000
this or if I had it way above my feet like that.

00:00:58,000 --> 00:01:00,000
Obviously that's going to influence the shot a ton.

00:01:00,000 --> 00:01:06,000
Well, does it matter on say a T-box if the T-box slightly crowned if it changes a couple

00:01:06,000 --> 00:01:07,000
degrees?

00:01:07,000 --> 00:01:12,000
My stance is yes that even the brain is going to make adjustments for those few degrees.

00:01:12,000 --> 00:01:14,000
So I emphasize that you want to read every lie.

00:01:14,000 --> 00:01:18,000
Now we've got these two different kind of exaggerated scenarios so that we can talk about

00:01:18,000 --> 00:01:24,000
them and you can do a smaller version when you're looking at your own kind of subtle shots.

00:01:24,000 --> 00:01:31,000
So one of the simple things is when the ball is below my feet or when the ball is above

00:01:31,000 --> 00:01:36,000
my feet when I have a non-traditional stance because of what will happen in my ankles

00:01:36,000 --> 00:01:40,000
it's going to make it harder for me to power the swing with my lower body.

00:01:40,000 --> 00:01:45,000
So what I have to do is I have to try to use my core, use my arms.

00:01:45,000 --> 00:01:52,000
I have to try to kind of maintain a lot of my alignments in geometry without using my lower

00:01:52,000 --> 00:01:56,000
body as the main power source because what happens is when the balls below my feet like this,

00:01:57,000 --> 00:02:02,000
my ankle now has more range of motion for me to kind of rotate that lower body.

00:02:02,000 --> 00:02:06,000
But what will happen is if I start to shift even a little bit because of the ball being below

00:02:06,000 --> 00:02:11,000
my feet and my weight being more towards my toes I'm going to tend to fall over.

00:02:12,000 --> 00:02:19,000
The opposite is when I'm here I could use my lower body a whole lot more for power

00:02:19,000 --> 00:02:24,000
but the problem is because the balls above my feet I'm already close to my max

00:02:25,000 --> 00:02:30,000
amount of ankle dorsiflection or basically I can't really bend my knees too much

00:02:31,000 --> 00:02:36,000
without going up on my toes. So when the balls above my feet it's more of a physical

00:02:36,000 --> 00:02:40,000
restriction that forces me to swing with my arms. When the balls below my feet

00:02:41,000 --> 00:02:46,000
it's more of a balance restriction that tends to force me to power it more with the upper body or

00:02:46,000 --> 00:02:53,000
with the arms. So in general I'm going to have to have a little adjustment that I'm going to make

00:02:53,000 --> 00:02:59,000
based on how much contribution I'm going to get from my lower body. Now let's talk about

00:03:00,000 --> 00:03:06,000
the shop possibility. So when the ball is below my feet like this it means that the ground is kind

00:03:06,000 --> 00:03:12,000
of tilted away from me like that and the golf ball sitting here. If I was to try to come from the

00:03:12,000 --> 00:03:18,000
inside it wouldn't work too well because now the ground is going to be in the way. So I'm going

00:03:18,000 --> 00:03:24,000
to air on wanting to have a path that's going to be slightly outside to in so that I don't

00:03:24,000 --> 00:03:30,000
make contacts with the ground before the golf ball. So if I have an outside to in path then that gives

00:03:30,000 --> 00:03:38,000
me the options of playing a fade, a pole or a pole draw. Right and I could overfade over draw

00:03:38,000 --> 00:03:44,000
but those three basic categories I'm going to have my path going left if the face is square to the

00:03:44,000 --> 00:03:49,000
or open to that path it's going to curve back to the right if it's square to it I'm going to hit a

00:03:49,000 --> 00:03:54,000
pole and if it's close to what I'm going to hit a draw. So one of the things is I'll see a student who

00:03:54,000 --> 00:03:59,000
might be working on trying to hit more of a draw and they'll come up to this shot and they'll still

00:03:59,000 --> 00:04:05,000
try to hit a draw and I'll say well the ground is taken away a big part of your margin of air

00:04:05,000 --> 00:04:10,000
so why don't we play the safer shot why don't we play what the lie is dictating why don't we try

00:04:10,000 --> 00:04:17,000
more of a fade. The opposite is true when the ball is above my feet like this. The harder thing is

00:04:17,000 --> 00:04:22,000
if I get slightly on the outside I'm going to tend to strike the ground before the golf ball.

00:04:22,000 --> 00:04:27,000
I've got a lot of room to come from the inside and not hit the golf ball so I'm going to air on

00:04:27,000 --> 00:04:34,000
having more of a path that's into out. Now with it in the out path I can either hit a push a push

00:04:34,000 --> 00:04:43,000
fade or a nice draw possibly even an over draw or hook. So the ball being above my feet

00:04:43,000 --> 00:04:48,000
and the ball being below my feet tends to open and close the club face so when the balls above my

00:04:48,000 --> 00:04:52,000
feet that tends to close the club face which is part of the reason why it's going to be

00:04:52,000 --> 00:04:58,000
more likely I'm going to hit a ball that curves more to the left and the reason is if you

00:04:58,000 --> 00:05:04,000
review the club face closing when the shaft lowers like this the face is actually pointing to the left

00:05:05,000 --> 00:05:10,000
where in this situation here when the shaft raises it's actually pointing to the right. So

00:05:11,000 --> 00:05:19,000
that adjust the shot selections. So if I tend to be kind of really lower body dominant I have a ball

00:05:19,000 --> 00:05:24,000
below my feet that's going to be a real tough shot. If I have if I tend to be more upper body

00:05:24,000 --> 00:05:30,000
dominant and the ball is above my feet that's going to tend to be more of a tough shot. So we can use

00:05:30,000 --> 00:05:37,000
these lies to help adjust what you're working on but the big thing is even on t-shots I want

00:05:37,000 --> 00:05:42,000
you to be kind of aware of what's going on with the lie and what kind of shot that's going to

00:05:44,000 --> 00:05:49,000
dictate for you. So for example up here it's a little bit more of just the ball would be

00:05:49,000 --> 00:05:55,000
subtly below my feet but if I sense that I may still want to play more of a cut shot

00:05:56,000 --> 00:06:00,000
and not necessarily try to hit a draw because I would be more likely to hit a pull

00:06:00,000 --> 00:06:07,000
if I try to hit a draw. So read the lies know what they're going to do for you if that's

00:06:07,000 --> 00:06:11,000
significantly above or below you're not going to be able to use your lower body as well.

00:06:11,000 --> 00:06:15,000
You're going to have to find out a way to kind of get the same or similar alignments

00:06:15,000 --> 00:06:21,000
but using the upper body and the arms is more of your power source. So give that a try if you have

00:06:21,000 --> 00:06:26,000
any specific issues relating to your swing or your swing falters swing pattern please let us know

00:06:26,000 --> 00:06:31,000
and we can help you figure out which would be the easiest shot selections for you to use

00:06:31,000 --> 00:06:33,000
given different situations.
