Trail Arm Straight For Width

Keeping your trail arm straight can help create width at the top of the swing but more importantly, it helps you make your backswing with your core. This maximizes your ability to use your core on your downswing and power the swing in a more rotary fashion.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:03,000
This video is trail arm straight for width.

00:00:03,000 --> 00:00:09,000
So one of the common things that we're trying to do in this backswing is we are trying

00:00:09,000 --> 00:00:17,000
to enable the core to dominate the backswing movements while letting the arms kind of set

00:00:17,000 --> 00:00:20,000
the path and kind of get the arms in position.

00:00:20,000 --> 00:00:25,000
But we're allowing the core to dominate this backswing position so that it can get loaded

00:00:25,000 --> 00:00:29,000
so that it will be more likely to fire during transition.

00:00:29,000 --> 00:00:33,000
So there have been lots of different ways that golfers have described having more of this

00:00:33,000 --> 00:00:34,000
core load.

00:00:34,000 --> 00:00:38,000
The one piece take away is kind of that initial move.

00:00:38,000 --> 00:00:43,000
Feeling really wide at the top is another version of feeling like the core is doing

00:00:43,000 --> 00:00:45,000
most of the movements.

00:00:45,000 --> 00:00:50,000
Because basically what you'll see is if I start to move my shoulders, everything will

00:00:50,000 --> 00:00:53,000
narrow and everything will get up quickly.

00:00:53,000 --> 00:00:59,000
So golfers have described either low and slow, wide.

00:00:59,000 --> 00:01:03,000
But those are all just kind of feelings of what the body may be doing to create this

00:01:03,000 --> 00:01:04,000
one piece take away.

00:01:04,000 --> 00:01:08,000
Well one of the areas that I tend to see relate to this one piece take away is looking

00:01:08,000 --> 00:01:11,000
at the relationship for the trail arm.

00:01:11,000 --> 00:01:15,000
But we'll talk about the trail arm and the lead arm and how they can influence whether

00:01:15,000 --> 00:01:21,000
you're doing more of this body pivot and therefore get your body and shoulders in a good

00:01:21,000 --> 00:01:24,000
position so that you can transition well.

00:01:24,000 --> 00:01:29,000
Or if you're setting the club more within arm movement which may lead to transition

00:01:29,000 --> 00:01:31,000
issues.

00:01:31,000 --> 00:01:37,000
So with the one piece pivot or take away, we're going to take a look at that right

00:01:37,000 --> 00:01:41,000
elbow staying straighter a little bit longer.

00:01:41,000 --> 00:01:47,000
Now if you do this on nine to three shots and you tend to kind of bottom out, then it

00:01:47,000 --> 00:01:52,000
means that you're bending this arm in order to create some of the depth because you're

00:01:52,000 --> 00:01:56,000
not shallowing enough with the shoulders or forearms.

00:01:56,000 --> 00:02:03,000
But keeping that right arm straighter a little bit longer tends to force the body to

00:02:03,000 --> 00:02:05,000
dominate that early part of the take away.

00:02:05,000 --> 00:02:10,000
And we can look at that as it gets to the top of the swing because in order for the

00:02:10,000 --> 00:02:16,000
elbow to work behind you or to really bend, you will tend to see the arms work a little

00:02:16,000 --> 00:02:19,000
bit more across the body.

00:02:19,000 --> 00:02:25,000
So that's why a lot of golfers have described having that with the top as a really good

00:02:25,000 --> 00:02:26,000
feeling.

00:02:26,000 --> 00:02:31,000
It kind of complements making most of the movements happen from the body as opposed to

00:02:31,000 --> 00:02:32,000
from the arms.

00:02:32,000 --> 00:02:39,000
So from the down the line, a good little checkpoint is looking at the when this trail arm

00:02:39,000 --> 00:02:43,000
is straightening and making sure that it's not really, or sorry, when it's bending and making

00:02:43,000 --> 00:02:52,000
sure that it's not bending until pretty much after this shaft parallel movement or as

00:02:52,000 --> 00:02:58,000
you go to set the club, looking at where that right arm is in relationship to your chest.

00:02:58,000 --> 00:03:03,000
Now you can look at the left arm and its relationship to the chest as well.

00:03:03,000 --> 00:03:06,000
And what you'll see is if that right arm stays straight, it's very hard for that left arm

00:03:06,000 --> 00:03:07,000
to get too deep.

00:03:07,000 --> 00:03:12,000
If I bend this arm and I'll try not to smush the microphone, but if I bend this left arm,

00:03:12,000 --> 00:03:17,000
or sorry, this right arm, then this left arm can really work across my body.

00:03:17,000 --> 00:03:22,000
If that right arm stays straight, even if I try to move that left arm across my body,

00:03:22,000 --> 00:03:27,000
I'm going to struggle with getting kind of stuck behind myself at the top.

00:03:27,000 --> 00:03:32,000
And again, if the arms are more out in front of me kind of like so, my shoulder isn't

00:03:32,000 --> 00:03:37,000
a position where it can naturally shallow during transition, where if these arms get way

00:03:37,000 --> 00:03:43,000
behind, I'll lose some of that rotation capability, so I'll be more likely to get steep

00:03:43,000 --> 00:03:44,000
in transition.

00:03:44,000 --> 00:03:49,000
So if you're struggling with having either an arm dominated backswing or if you're struggling

00:03:49,000 --> 00:03:53,000
with having the arms get too much behind you at the top, working on feeling that right

00:03:53,000 --> 00:03:57,000
arm staying straight or longer can help you overcome that.

00:03:57,000 --> 00:04:03,000
When you go to hit, you can either use kind of a supported one arm swing and kind of feel

00:04:03,000 --> 00:04:08,000
that width up at the top and then once you have a good sensation of that width, you

00:04:08,000 --> 00:04:12,000
can make that same movement and then put your left arm in place.

00:04:12,000 --> 00:04:18,000
This may feel like I'm really reaching, but you'll be able to confirm either with cameras

00:04:18,000 --> 00:04:25,000
or the fact that this right arm is staying straighter, so that you can then feel that

00:04:25,000 --> 00:04:28,000
the body has kind of dominated the movement.

00:04:28,000 --> 00:04:33,000
Then what you do is you set up to a normal wall and you try to recreate that same kind

00:04:33,000 --> 00:04:34,000
of feeling.

00:04:34,000 --> 00:04:38,000
If it works out, it should help with the movements that you're trying to do on the downswing,

00:04:38,000 --> 00:04:44,000
but I always work on the downswing first because the backswing ultimately sets up what you

00:04:44,000 --> 00:04:45,000
want to do on the downswing.

00:04:45,000 --> 00:04:48,000
It doesn't naturally just cause a perfect downswing.
