Using a metronome for tempo - Putting

Using a metronome is a classic way to train your putting rhythm. I personally like using a setting of about 70 beats per minute. It's a good starting point for most golfers. Feel free to adjust it faster or slower if your swing feels dramatically different. When using the metronome, try to emphasize taking the putter away on one beat and then striking the ball on the second beat. This timing should be the same regarless of putt length.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:08,000
The drill is training your tempo with a metronome.

00:00:08,000 --> 00:00:12,000
So not everybody kind of feels tempo the same way.

00:00:12,000 --> 00:00:14,000
Some people are much more auditory.

00:00:14,000 --> 00:00:17,000
So there's a lot of free metronome apps.

00:00:17,000 --> 00:00:21,000
You can hear that I've got a beat playing here.

00:00:21,000 --> 00:00:22,000
This is 70 beats per minute.

00:00:22,000 --> 00:00:24,000
That's a good starting point.

00:00:24,000 --> 00:00:26,000
Some people are a little bit slower.

00:00:26,000 --> 00:00:29,000
Maybe as low as 64 and some people are as fast as

00:00:29,000 --> 00:00:31,000
about 80.

00:00:31,000 --> 00:00:36,000
But just kind of finding a rhythm that kind of feels like it matches your stroke.

00:00:36,000 --> 00:00:41,000
I think the more important thing is that you're consistent with the number rather than

00:00:41,000 --> 00:00:44,000
finding the perfect number for your swing.

00:00:44,000 --> 00:00:48,000
So if you're going to train the metronome, then what we want to do is you are going to

00:00:48,000 --> 00:00:53,000
have one beat is going to be the start of the swing and the second beat is going to be

00:00:53,000 --> 00:00:54,000
impact.

00:00:54,000 --> 00:00:57,000
So we've got take away impact.

00:00:57,000 --> 00:00:59,000
Take away impact.

00:00:59,000 --> 00:01:01,000
Take away impact.

00:01:01,000 --> 00:01:03,000
Take away impact.

00:01:03,000 --> 00:01:04,000
Take away impact.

00:01:04,000 --> 00:01:05,000
Take away impact.

00:01:05,000 --> 00:01:06,000
Take away impact.

00:01:06,000 --> 00:01:14,000
Now the key here is to get the same tempo on different length swings.

00:01:14,000 --> 00:01:15,000
Take away impact.

00:01:15,000 --> 00:01:17,000
Take away impact.

00:01:17,000 --> 00:01:19,000
Take away impact.

00:01:19,000 --> 00:01:23,000
Take away impact.

00:01:23,000 --> 00:01:27,000
That's one way to get the rate of falling because if you are really accelerating it will

00:01:27,000 --> 00:01:30,000
make it harder to get ready for the next swing.

00:01:30,000 --> 00:01:36,000
Also it will tend to make it go slow fast and the hard time hitting that second beat.

00:01:36,000 --> 00:01:39,000
So we will hit a couple here.

00:01:39,000 --> 00:01:44,000
I've got fairly short put here but the tempo should work regardless of the length of

00:01:44,000 --> 00:01:45,000
swing.

00:01:45,000 --> 00:01:49,000
In just in case we can't hear it, we'll keep the mantra going.

00:01:49,000 --> 00:01:50,000
Take away impact.

00:01:50,000 --> 00:01:52,000
Take away impact.

00:01:52,000 --> 00:01:54,000
Take away impact.

00:01:54,000 --> 00:01:58,000
So you'll see that that had pretty good rhythm to it.

00:01:58,000 --> 00:02:02,000
To me that feels like just letting the putter fall so I kind of bring it back.

00:02:02,000 --> 00:02:03,000
Let it fall.

00:02:03,000 --> 00:02:04,000
Bring it back.

00:02:04,000 --> 00:02:05,000
Let it fall.

00:02:05,000 --> 00:02:08,000
I'm doing that mostly with the larger muscles in my shoulder.

00:02:08,000 --> 00:02:15,000
But the letting it fall is more of a passive dead weight kind of wrecking ball image of hitting

00:02:15,000 --> 00:02:21,000
the ball rather than trying to overly accelerate it.

00:02:21,000 --> 00:02:23,000
You'll see if I overly accelerate it.

00:02:23,000 --> 00:02:28,000
It was hard for me to recreate accelerating it at the same amount in the same time.

00:02:28,000 --> 00:02:35,000
So I highly recommend training your gravity or training your consistent acceleration.

00:02:35,000 --> 00:02:39,000
If you're not too much into some of the feels such as the weights and the pendulum and

00:02:39,000 --> 00:02:44,000
things like that, then I highly recommend trying an auditory approach using a metronome.

00:02:44,000 --> 00:02:47,000
Let's see one more long one.

00:02:47,000 --> 00:02:49,000
Take away impact.

00:02:49,000 --> 00:02:51,000
Take away impact.

00:02:51,000 --> 00:02:52,000
Take away impact.

00:02:52,000 --> 00:02:54,000
Kind of like that.
