Kwon’s reverse pivot posture?

I watch Dr. Kwon’s reprogramming sessions on YouTube. One of the things he teaches the golfers to do in session is what he calls a “reverse pivot posture” at the top of swing.

Is this a good, advisable position to be in? If so, what are some good drills to get in that position? If not, what is a better alternative position to work on?

One thing I did to strain my lower right (trail) side back/side area is to do some kind of right side crunch on the downswing when trying to do Kwon’s swing motion. Not sure why I’m doing that but when I am able to use the body to just turn around for the downswing, I avoid the crunching.

Hi Mark,

What Dr. Kwon refers to as reverse pivot posture at the top is not the same as what TPI calls reverse spine angle. His reverse hip posture seems to focus on better loading of the glutes at the top. When you move the hips toward the target and maintain too much trunk lean away from the target, you load more the lat muscle on the lead side.

The backswing drills, loading the glute from a centered pivot should all help with that idea. A common pitfall is that people who like to load the lat more than the glute will push their knee out to make the backswing pivot posture rather than the hip. I'd say that it's less about pushing it out and more about avoiding it stay in hip flexion.

That move can be helpful for distance and speed, but might create some short term timing issues. Overall, I like the idea of a more centered pivot with better hip and ab loading, which aligns with what Dr. Kwon is advocating.

Happy Golfing,
Tyler
