Swing Plane Simplified - Working with steeps and shallows

The three step ball-striking plan provides a good starting point for working through your golf swing. Start with set up and brushing the ground and work on quality of contact. Then work on the release and try to make the brushing of the ground feel more natural. Next, work on transition sequencing to make the downswing feel athletic. Lastly work on some backswing pivot ideas to help make contact more consistent. When you want to work through the full swing, this order works well from a learning and performance perspective.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:02,000
This is the three-step swing plan.
00:00:02,000 --> 00:00:09,000
So we've had a number of requests for kind of a little bit more structure, like say, a six-week program,
00:00:09,000 --> 00:00:13,000
or three-week program, to kind of go through all the content of the full swing.
00:00:13,000 --> 00:00:18,000
So I'd like to point out that I think that it's a challenge to go through all the content
00:00:18,000 --> 00:00:21,000
in one sequential plan.
00:00:21,000 --> 00:00:27,000
But we can use a plan to pinpoint some of the key areas to focus on, and then you can use
00:00:27,000 --> 00:00:32,000
some of the additional videos to kind of build upon the main points that you figure
00:00:32,000 --> 00:00:33,000
out in that plan.
00:00:33,000 --> 00:00:36,000
So the three-step plan, the way I would go about this swing.
00:00:36,000 --> 00:00:40,000
And I frequently use this at the beginning of the season just to kind of take inventory
00:00:40,000 --> 00:00:46,000
and see where my swings at or to refresh kind of the fundamentals, as I think they're
00:00:46,000 --> 00:00:47,000
key.
00:00:47,000 --> 00:00:52,000
And you can use this as kind of a short-term six-week program, three-week program.
00:00:52,000 --> 00:00:58,000
I've seen it done even in a week of trying to get ready for an event and really establish
00:00:58,000 --> 00:00:59,000
some playing fields.
00:00:59,000 --> 00:01:04,000
So it's kind of like it's almost like tasting all the different areas of the swing and figuring
00:01:04,000 --> 00:01:08,000
out which ones are the most important for me right now.
00:01:08,000 --> 00:01:16,000
So the three-step samples, the step one, we're going to work on set up and brushing the
00:01:16,000 --> 00:01:17,000
ground.
00:01:17,000 --> 00:01:21,000
Step two, we're going to work on sequencing and then step three, we're going to work
00:01:21,000 --> 00:01:23,000
on the back swing.
00:01:23,000 --> 00:01:26,000
Now within step three, we're going to revisit the brush.
00:01:26,000 --> 00:01:30,000
We'll work on back swing and brush because the brush location is so important for building
00:01:30,000 --> 00:01:34,000
that playing field and taking you away from too many internal thoughts and getting really
00:01:34,000 --> 00:01:37,000
externally focused on where the club head is.
00:01:37,000 --> 00:01:41,000
So step one would be working on some of your setup fundamentals.
00:01:41,000 --> 00:01:46,000
So you can look through the setup section and if you're doing this as a review, you can
00:01:46,000 --> 00:01:49,000
just kind of refresh which might be your keys.
00:01:49,000 --> 00:01:56,000
But basically finding a good posture, so kind of keeping my core engaged, slide my hands
00:01:56,000 --> 00:02:01,000
down until they're at about my kneecaps, feeling even weight distribution.
00:02:01,000 --> 00:02:08,000
So kind of good neutral spine, letting my arms hang and then taking my good grip procedure.
00:02:08,000 --> 00:02:13,000
We'll include some of the videos down here in step one, you can jump along and follow
00:02:13,000 --> 00:02:14,000
those.
00:02:15,000 --> 00:02:21,000
The problem with just doing setup is it doesn't really give you a good concept to work
00:02:21,000 --> 00:02:22,000
on during the swing.
00:02:22,000 --> 00:02:26,000
So it can be pretty good anchor as far as a playing field, like, okay, I'm going to get
00:02:26,000 --> 00:02:28,000
in this good setup and then I'm just going to press play.
00:02:28,000 --> 00:02:31,000
I'm just going to let the swing go.
00:02:31,000 --> 00:02:35,000
But for this little for a three step program, it doesn't make sense for that to be the
00:02:35,000 --> 00:02:37,000
only thing you do in step one.
00:02:37,000 --> 00:02:41,000
So step one, you're working on these setup fundamentals and then you're trying to work
00:02:41,000 --> 00:02:47,000
on getting the club to brush the ground and finish in a good follow through.
00:02:47,000 --> 00:02:53,000
So if I field a club, kind of slamming in the ground, I'm just going to do little adjustments
00:02:53,000 --> 00:03:00,000
and just see what I can athletically figure out, get my body to do, to brush the ground
00:03:00,000 --> 00:03:01,000
in a good way.
00:03:01,000 --> 00:03:03,000
So I'm working through this.
00:03:03,000 --> 00:03:07,000
This could be one practice session, this could be three practice sessions, this could
00:03:07,000 --> 00:03:09,000
be a whole month.
00:03:09,000 --> 00:03:14,000
So I'm putting these in terms of steps instead of timelines because everybody is going
00:03:14,000 --> 00:03:19,000
to have a different amount of practice, focus, their level of attention.
00:03:19,000 --> 00:03:22,000
So this is just step one.
00:03:22,000 --> 00:03:31,000
Okay, so step one, find that good setup position, you know, in from the hips, good spine,
00:03:31,000 --> 00:03:35,000
good weight distribution, iron, so slightly forward, good arm hang.
00:03:35,000 --> 00:03:37,000
All right, setup feels pretty good.
00:03:37,000 --> 00:03:43,000
And now in my mind, I'm just feeling that club brushing the ground and using whatever kind
00:03:43,000 --> 00:03:49,000
of playing field I've got to do that and then I can take some swings trying to get that
00:03:49,000 --> 00:03:50,000
club to brush the ground.
00:03:51,000 --> 00:03:57,000
Okay, step two, once I feel like I've got not even mastery, but kind of some proficiency
00:03:57,000 --> 00:04:01,000
with just brushing the ground, now I'm going to work on sequencing.
00:04:01,000 --> 00:04:04,000
So I'm going to work on transition into downswing.
00:04:04,000 --> 00:04:09,000
I'm going to work on getting my lower body to kind of initiate.
00:04:09,000 --> 00:04:14,000
I'm going to work on maintaining my spine, so I'm not going into early extension.
00:04:14,000 --> 00:04:16,000
I'm not going into a forward lunge.
00:04:17,000 --> 00:04:21,000
I'm working on the sequencing transition and kind of getting into a good delivery position.
00:04:22,000 --> 00:04:24,000
So we started down with impact and brushing.
00:04:24,000 --> 00:04:31,000
Now we're working back to delivery, but what I can do here is I can add in any of the
00:04:31,000 --> 00:04:36,000
feelings that I was using during that first step of the getting the club to brush while
00:04:36,000 --> 00:04:38,000
I'm working on these transitions.
00:04:38,000 --> 00:04:41,000
So I may be doing kind of some step drills.
00:04:42,000 --> 00:04:47,000
I may be doing some pump drills kind of like so.
00:04:48,000 --> 00:04:54,000
I may be doing some broken transition focusing on either the armshyowing, the early
00:04:54,000 --> 00:04:59,000
closing or focusing on the sequencing of the body movements, right?
00:04:59,000 --> 00:05:05,000
So trying to get my thighs to be or my belt buckle kind of pointing out there while the club
00:05:05,000 --> 00:05:06,000
is still behind me.
00:05:07,000 --> 00:05:13,000
All those sequencing and timing movements that yield in yield a really good transition.
00:05:13,000 --> 00:05:15,000
So step one, I was getting brushing.
00:05:16,000 --> 00:05:22,000
Now I'm going to do swing where I focus a little bit more on getting some of those
00:05:23,000 --> 00:05:25,000
transition sequencing feelings.
00:05:25,000 --> 00:05:28,000
Now I've got kind of that sequence that I want.
00:05:30,000 --> 00:05:33,000
And I kind of let it go just like so.
00:05:33,000 --> 00:05:35,000
So now I've got to really solid down swing.
00:05:35,000 --> 00:05:41,000
I've got a good feeling on there, but my contact might not be what I want or it might take too much
00:05:41,000 --> 00:05:45,000
mental focus for me to really feel like I can go play with those thoughts.
00:05:45,000 --> 00:05:49,000
So step three, as I'm going to review some of the back swing things.
00:05:49,000 --> 00:05:56,000
So I'm going to work on getting a good one piece take away, keeping the club kind of out in front of me,
00:05:56,000 --> 00:05:59,000
not letting it get too far inside or not letting it just be arms.
00:05:59,000 --> 00:06:04,000
So all those bad things getting the the body to kind of initiate the takeaway.
00:06:06,000 --> 00:06:09,000
And then making sure that I keep a relatively centered pivot.
00:06:09,000 --> 00:06:15,000
So while I have a pretty good pressure shift and I have a little bit of movement off the ball,
00:06:15,000 --> 00:06:18,000
I don't want to have a big upper body or lower body sway off the ball.
00:06:19,000 --> 00:06:23,000
And I work on my shoulder tilt and kind of width up at the top.
00:06:23,000 --> 00:06:30,000
So I'd work on the shoulders getting a little bit more tilted, having more of that kind of left side crunch.
00:06:30,000 --> 00:06:40,000
Well, I was made to get into my trail hip and I'd focus on having my arms extend getting the club on on path and plane.
00:06:42,000 --> 00:06:49,000
And then I would revisit some of the things that I've done with either step one or step two.
00:06:50,000 --> 00:06:55,000
So what I would highly recommend, you're not doing already, when you go through one of these like three step programs,
00:06:56,000 --> 00:07:01,000
set up a journal so that you can keep notes as to what were your really good playing fields.
00:07:01,000 --> 00:07:08,000
I like to kind of rate the date and then I'll write down what is my plan when I go to the range,
00:07:08,000 --> 00:07:12,000
what am I going to work on? I'll write on what did I discover when I was at the range?
00:07:12,000 --> 00:07:20,000
And then I'll write when I left on a scale one to ten how successful was the practice, how well was I hitting the golf ball at the end.
00:07:21,000 --> 00:07:26,000
I personally because I like to dabble a little bit with art,
00:07:27,000 --> 00:07:34,000
I'll draw what my swing thoughts were in my journal, usually which is stick figures, but I'll draw it so that I have a good memory of it.
00:07:35,000 --> 00:07:39,000
So when I'm doing these back swing drills or this back swing step,
00:07:40,000 --> 00:07:46,000
I'm also going to focus again on brushing the ground and revisiting that kind of follow through
00:07:46,000 --> 00:07:52,000
our extension thing. So now I may be kind of feeling some of these back swing moves,
00:07:53,000 --> 00:08:00,000
feeling that back swing pivot, there we go, there's pretty good, well back swing move and now I'm just going to
00:08:01,000 --> 00:08:08,000
shift my focus from back swing to that follow through as I work through the practice. So good back swing move,
00:08:10,000 --> 00:08:17,000
kind of like so. And now when I did that I felt like my sequence in transition wasn't quite as good as when I was
00:08:17,000 --> 00:08:23,000
focusing on on sequence, but this might be something that'd be easier for me to play if I was potentially
00:08:23,000 --> 00:08:29,000
getting ready for a trip or a tournament. So this is great to do either at the end of the season as kind of a
00:08:29,000 --> 00:08:35,000
wrapping things down. At the beginning of season to refresh everything that you've studied over the last year.
00:08:35,000 --> 00:08:41,000
So or for a short term, how can I develop some good playing fields where I'm not really sure where my
00:08:41,000 --> 00:08:48,000
swings at is a great way to work through any of those three challenges. And if you come up with any other
00:08:48,000 --> 00:08:55,000
suggestions of how you can use these three separate programs, please send us a message in the bottom here.
00:08:55,000 --> 00:09:00,000
Because I think that you'll come up with some great ways to use this little program in addition to what
00:09:00,000 --> 00:09:01,000
I've laid out here for you.
