See The Putt As Straight

Find a straight 15 foot putt and put a second golf ball directly in line with your ball and the center of the hole. Have someone stand behind the second golf ball and set up normally. Tell your buddy to move as soon as you think you are lined up in such a way that if you hit a putt, it would hit the golf ball. Look, as he steps out of the way, to see if the golf ball would hit the center of the hole if the second golf ball were moved. If the ball would miss the center of the hole, then adjust your head position until you see it hit the center of the whole. This is the position that you see straight from and should strive to achieve when putting.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:06,000
So now that you know which eye dominance you are, let's figure out your specific needs.

00:00:06,000 --> 00:00:11,000
Where do we need to have your head so that you can see the put as straight?

00:00:11,000 --> 00:00:15,000
I got this from an instructor who spent a lot of time with a snooker players and they

00:00:15,000 --> 00:00:21,000
focus a lot on getting their eyes in the right position to be able to see where straight is.

00:00:21,000 --> 00:00:25,000
Because if you set up to a straight line and you don't see it as straight, your brain is not

00:00:25,000 --> 00:00:28,000
going to let you make a confidence stroke.

00:00:28,000 --> 00:00:34,000
So I've got a simple little setup here that you can use again, you're going to need to find a

00:00:34,000 --> 00:00:38,000
golf buddy or your pro and you can go through the setup with them.

00:00:38,000 --> 00:00:43,000
But this is one of the best ways I've figured out for fine tuning your visual alignment.

00:00:43,000 --> 00:00:47,000
So I've got two golf balls and a golf hole.

00:00:47,000 --> 00:00:52,000
Ideally this is about 15 feet, 15 to 20 feet somewhere in there so kind of a medium length

00:00:52,000 --> 00:00:53,000
foot.

00:00:53,000 --> 00:00:58,000
You want the middle ball to be laser so that it's right in line with the center of the

00:00:58,000 --> 00:01:01,000
hole compared to the first ball.

00:01:01,000 --> 00:01:03,000
And it should be about halfway in between.

00:01:03,000 --> 00:01:10,000
What you'll do is you will have your friend or your buddy or your golf bro stand behind

00:01:10,000 --> 00:01:14,000
the intermediate ball so that you can't see the golf ball or so that you can't see the

00:01:14,000 --> 00:01:16,000
golf hole.

00:01:16,000 --> 00:01:22,000
So you're going to get set up to this first ball and aim it at that second ball while

00:01:22,000 --> 00:01:24,000
your buddy is standing in the way.

00:01:24,000 --> 00:01:28,000
Once you believe that if you hit it it would hit the center dimple right in the middle

00:01:28,000 --> 00:01:29,000
of that golf ball.

00:01:29,000 --> 00:01:33,000
You're going to have this person move and step out of the way and then you're just going

00:01:33,000 --> 00:01:39,000
to track with your eyes to see if that first golf ball were to hit the second golf ball.

00:01:39,000 --> 00:01:43,000
If it continued along that line would hit the center of the hole.

00:01:43,000 --> 00:01:50,000
Most of you are going to say maybe this takes a little bit of practice but if you look

00:01:50,000 --> 00:01:54,000
at it and it looks like it would hit either the edge of the hole or even miss the hole.

00:01:54,000 --> 00:02:01,000
When I first did it for me my golf ball was going to miss the hole on the left side.

00:02:01,000 --> 00:02:05,000
So a straight line did not look straight and I needed to make adjustments.

00:02:05,000 --> 00:02:10,000
So here are some ideas for ways that you can make adjustments if you are set up to the golf

00:02:10,000 --> 00:02:13,000
ball and straight still doesn't look straight.

00:02:13,000 --> 00:02:16,000
Even after you've accounted for your eye dominance.

00:02:16,000 --> 00:02:23,000
The two most common ways are either moving your head forward backward or up down.

00:02:23,000 --> 00:02:29,000
For up down it's basically going to be whether or not you have your chin up or you have

00:02:29,000 --> 00:02:34,000
your chin down is going to adjust the way that your eyes see this straight line.

00:02:34,000 --> 00:02:36,000
For most, same side dominance.

00:02:36,000 --> 00:02:42,000
Right eye right hand you're going to do better with your eyes tilted more down or your chin

00:02:42,000 --> 00:02:43,000
tilted more down.

00:02:43,000 --> 00:02:49,000
Now I want you to make sure that you can see that it's not my whole spine that's collapsing

00:02:49,000 --> 00:02:50,000
in tilting down.

00:02:50,000 --> 00:02:55,000
It's just my chin because I want my spine to still be able to rotate but I want my eyes

00:02:55,000 --> 00:02:58,000
to be as close to vertical on this plane as I can.

00:02:58,000 --> 00:03:03,000
The reason is that the more that it gets to vertical the more that when I tilt my head

00:03:03,000 --> 00:03:08,000
or rotate my head my eyes will still be on that line.

00:03:08,000 --> 00:03:12,000
If I'm up here and I rotate my head so that my right eye can see you can see that my

00:03:12,000 --> 00:03:16,000
eye plane is totally shifted.

00:03:16,000 --> 00:03:22,000
The chin down tends to help right eye dominant players if you do this setup drill and it's

00:03:22,000 --> 00:03:24,000
not working out correctly.

00:03:24,000 --> 00:03:29,000
The other option is moving either your head slightly back or slightly forward.

00:03:29,000 --> 00:03:35,000
Now that will tend to change your physical alignment but that is a much higher priority than

00:03:35,000 --> 00:03:38,000
just having your shoulders perfectly square if it doesn't look straight because you'll

00:03:38,000 --> 00:03:40,000
never buy into it.

00:03:40,000 --> 00:03:44,000
So go through this little drill.

00:03:44,000 --> 00:03:48,000
Play with it a couple times until you have a consistent read and you're able to see straight

00:03:48,000 --> 00:03:52,000
as straight and then you can move on to the next step which is getting your physical

00:03:52,000 --> 00:03:54,000
alignment in all tuned out.

00:03:54,000 --> 00:03:56,000
So give that a try and we'll see you at the next clip.
