Keys To Transition
Subscribe now to watch the full video.
In this drill, we are going to rehearse the transition of the arms, without the complications of the body. The right elbow is going to work infront of the body and toward the right hip. At the same time, the wrists are going to fold in as well.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:04,000
This video is transition of just the arms.
00:00:04,000 --> 00:00:08,000
Now during transition we're going to have a number of pieces moving and kind of getting ready
00:00:08,000 --> 00:00:09,000
for the release.
00:00:09,000 --> 00:00:14,000
But if we want to, we can isolate it just what the arms are doing and practice them in isolation.
00:00:14,000 --> 00:00:16,000
So here's what we're going to do.
00:00:16,000 --> 00:00:18,000
We'll start with the lean arm.
00:00:18,000 --> 00:00:23,000
During transition, which is going to be basically when my body starts changing direction
00:00:23,000 --> 00:00:28,000
from the backswing to getting into delivery position, we're going to call that transition.
00:00:28,000 --> 00:00:31,000
So basically, from right about there to right about there.
00:00:31,000 --> 00:00:34,000
It's a very important move and there's a number of different pieces.
00:00:34,000 --> 00:00:37,000
Let's focus on just the arms for this video.
00:00:37,000 --> 00:00:42,000
So during that transition movement, the lead of wrist is going to pronate just slightly
00:00:42,000 --> 00:00:43,000
like so.
00:00:43,000 --> 00:00:49,000
The lead arm is going to work slightly across my chest and that's actually the major movement
00:00:49,000 --> 00:00:50,000
of this lead side.
00:00:50,000 --> 00:00:54,000
Is it's basically going to rotate across just like so.
00:00:54,000 --> 00:00:58,000
The trail arm is going to be somewhere around here, if you remember from the top of the
00:00:58,000 --> 00:00:59,000
backswing.
00:00:59,000 --> 00:01:05,000
From here, this elbow is going to start working across my body just like so as it's working
00:01:05,000 --> 00:01:07,000
kind of down towards my belly button.
00:01:07,000 --> 00:01:12,000
So it's going into external rotation kind of like so.
00:01:12,000 --> 00:01:14,000
And the wrist is going to work its way.
00:01:14,000 --> 00:01:18,000
It's already in a fair amount of extension at the top of the swing, but it's going to work
00:01:18,000 --> 00:01:21,000
into more extension as it goes into transition.
00:01:21,000 --> 00:01:26,000
So if I put those two together, it's going to end up looking, we'll do just the arm.
00:01:26,000 --> 00:01:30,000
So here I am at the top of the swing and then there I am in transition.
00:01:30,000 --> 00:01:34,000
And you'll see that that pretty much gets me into this delivery position.
00:01:34,000 --> 00:01:39,000
So if I was to then add and kind of unify it with the body, what'll end up happening is
00:01:39,000 --> 00:01:41,000
from the top of the swing.
00:01:41,000 --> 00:01:47,000
As my body starts to rotate, that trail arm works in front, wrist goes into extension,
00:01:47,000 --> 00:01:50,000
lead arm works across and rotates slightly.
00:01:50,000 --> 00:01:54,000
Our goal is to turn that into kind of one little movement, just like if I was throwing
00:01:54,000 --> 00:02:00,000
a ball, there's kind of this one movement before I release, kind of that little lag movement.
00:02:00,000 --> 00:02:04,000
Now if we take a look from the down the line view, when I do that movement, kind of up
00:02:04,000 --> 00:02:08,000
in here, you'll see that the club is going to flatten a fair amount.
00:02:08,000 --> 00:02:13,000
Like if I don't use my body at all and I just do the arm movements, you'll see that it
00:02:13,000 --> 00:02:15,000
gets the almost parallel to the ground.
00:02:15,000 --> 00:02:19,000
For some guys like a Sergio Garcia, it will actually get the low parallel.
00:02:20,000 --> 00:02:24,000
Now it's not going to look quite that drastic when you're actually taking a swing
00:02:24,000 --> 00:02:28,000
because what'll happen is at the same time the arms are doing this, the body is already
00:02:28,000 --> 00:02:33,000
started to rotate and shift weight and so it's just going to look like it slightly drops.
00:02:33,000 --> 00:02:38,000
But that drop is going to be really important for getting the shaft plane slightly flatter than
00:02:38,000 --> 00:02:42,000
the hand plane, which is one of those kind of big keys that we're trying to get into transition.
00:02:42,000 --> 00:02:47,000
So that gives you a way that you can practice this when you're just sitting and watching TV
00:02:47,000 --> 00:02:51,000
or anytime you're in an elevator and you're working on transition.
00:02:51,000 --> 00:02:55,000
This is a great way to kind of reinforce the pattern of just what the arms are going to do
00:02:55,000 --> 00:03:00,000
so that then when you're on the range, put your attention on what the body needs to do.
