Driver vs Iron Overview

Knowing the differences between the driver swing and the iron swing is a key for self coaching

There are enough differences between clubs that you'll need to know how to interpret the feedback to optimize all the clubs. Here are a few key differences.

Driver

  • More of a flat spot compared to the ground - a sweeping motion
  • This flat spot is less change in face angle, loft, and path
  • It's more of a body hit - using the legs and the core as more of the engine
  • More axis tilt when looking at the impact line

Iron

  • Low point ahead of the golf ball (approximately 4 inches or so)
  • Shaft lean at impact
  • Face to path is not as critical as driver, but face to target is key
  • Centered pivot to help control low point
